Curriculum Statement

At Dovecote Primary School, our curriculum is designed to give every child the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to thrive both now and in the future.

Our curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum while reflecting the children, families and community we serve. It is ambitious, inclusive and accessible, providing strong foundations for future learning while encouraging children to be curious about the world around them.

Our curriculum reflects our three core values: Knowledge, Nurture and Enrichment.

Knowledge

We believe that knowledge provides the foundation for future learning.

Our curriculum is carefully planned so that children build their knowledge and skills as they progress through school. New learning connects to what children already know, helping them develop a deeper understanding and make meaningful links within and between subjects.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. High-quality texts, rich vocabulary and opportunities to read across different subjects help children become confident readers and give them access to learning throughout the curriculum.

We want children to leave Dovecote with secure foundations, a love of learning and the confidence to continue building their knowledge throughout their lives.

Nurture

Children learn best when they feel safe, supported and confident.

Our curriculum supports children's personal, social and emotional development alongside their academic learning. Through relationships, health education and wider opportunities, children learn about themselves, other people and the diverse world in which they live.

We help children develop independence, resilience and perseverance, and encourage them to see mistakes and challenges as an important part of learning.

Our curriculum is inclusive and designed to provide every child with opportunities to participate, achieve and succeed.

Enrichment

We believe that some of the most powerful learning happens through experience.

Educational visits, visitors, outdoor learning, creative opportunities and links with our local community enrich children's classroom learning and help bring the curriculum to life.

Children learn about Clifton and Nottingham as well as the wider world, helping them understand their community, their place within it and the opportunities available beyond it.

We want children to discover their interests and talents, experience new things and develop aspirations for their future.

Preparing Children for the Future

Throughout their time at Dovecote, children have opportunities to develop practical and transferable skills that will support them beyond primary school.

We want our pupils to leave us as knowledgeable, curious and confident young people who are ready for the next stage of their education and understand that they can make a positive contribution to their community and the wider world.
