At Dovecote Primary School, we believe that children's education extends beyond the classroom.

Enrichment is one of our three core values, alongside Knowledge and Nurture. We want children to experience new things, discover their interests and talents, develop confidence and create positive memories of their time at Dovecote.

Throughout their time at school, children have opportunities to take part in activities and experiences that complement their classroom learning. These may include educational visits, visitors to school, music, sport, creative activities, outdoor learning, clubs and opportunities within our local community.

Our Secret Garden

We are very lucky to have our own safe, enclosed garden at Dovecote.

Known as The Secret Garden, it provides children with opportunities to learn about nature, growing food, wildlife and the environment through practical experience.

Children take part in activities including:

• preparing soil for planting;
• sowing seeds and planting bulbs;
• watering and caring for plants;
• weeding;
• growing fruit, vegetables and salad crops;
• harvesting produce; and
• creating and maintaining habitats for wildlife.

Gardening gives children opportunities to develop confidence, communication, teamwork and responsibility. For some children, the practical and peaceful outdoor environment also provides a different way to engage with learning.

The garden is used more widely across school for activities including wildlife spotting, curriculum learning and opportunities for quiet reflection and mindfulness.

Growing and Eating

One of the rewards of the Secret Garden is seeing — and tasting — what we have grown.

Children have opportunities to try produce including tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, grapes and peas. Produce can also be used in tasting activities and by our school kitchen.

This helps children understand where food comes from and encourages them to think about healthy eating, sustainability and caring for the environment.

Clubs and Wider Opportunities

Children also have opportunities to take part in a variety of clubs and activities beyond the classroom.

The opportunities available change throughout the year, allowing children to experience different activities and discover new interests.
